Founded in 2014 by Joanne Chew and based in Kuala Lumpur, Fictionist is a multi-disciplinary creative outfit, specialising in all platforms that involve the birth of an idea. We craft stories for brands, design books, identities, websites and exhibitions, make cultural observations and write about them, snap portraits of life’s mundane monstrosities and most importantly, indulge in the boundless yonder of imagination.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Joanne grew up wanting to be a lawyer / a Nobel Peace Prize-winning scientist / a wunderkind biotechnologist. Possessing a head for numbers and facts, she initially turned to science for answers. But when an X-acto knife eventually supplanted a scalpel as her instrument of choice, Joanne took a leap of faith and plunged headlong into the realm of art and design. Warmed by the bloom of artistic ideas stirring within her, Joanne’s newfound love of all things creative sustained her through the snowy winters of New York City where she earned a bachelors degree from Parsons the New School for Design. After countless internships and an eye-opening stint in a boutique design agency, Joanne moved, lock stock and barrel, back to Asia. There, she quickly found her feet as an independent creative, but not before gaining an array of experience at some of the finest boutique firms that Singapore and Kuala Lumpur had to offer.
